At last, a positive to end the weekend for me in that I’ve at last managed a run, dip and ride! I hope your week / weekend has been a positive one as well.
No one likes to be injured or sick, especially when exercise is a key part of one’s life and is used to support your own mental and physical wellbeing. When an illness or injury does occur, we then need to do all we can to minimise potential down time and having an ‘out of action’ plan available prior to that horrible day can significantly help. This plan could be as simple as engaging in another sport or taking up yoga or pilates, if the ailment permits; having some reading in place that you’ve not had time to get to previously, borrow a dog for long walks, catch up on home admin. or just have a rest and let the body recuperate – after all, a week off training will not have a significant impact on your overall training fitness!
I have been fortunate in that when ill I’ve been able to continue to support others, through coaching, who are exercising, and this provides me with a positive mindset and as much as I want to be joining in the sprints or hill repeats, I know it want be long before I’m fully fit and able to join in! Having a coffee and chat with the Friday social run crew helps too and these last few weeks, seeing the thoughtfulness of everyone donating a tin or two for the food bank run has been amazing.
